The Battle for Pelilliu World War II

| August 1, 2020

This is a Periscope Films presentation of the battle for Peleliu in the Pacific, taking it away from the Japanese.

Part of the description is here:  This film will take a look at the Battle of Peleliu which took place from September to November of 1944 during the Mariana and Palau Campaign of WW2. It had been produced by the US Army, Navy, and Marine Corp (:17). The amphibious assault was a joint effort consisting of the Army, Navy, Maine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard (:25).

Pop some popcorn and grab a cold one. This will only ask for a tad over 20 minutes of your life.

Where’s the Boomer thread?

Oh no.
Wrong day of the week.

Watch the episode on Peleliu from the HBO series “The Pacific”.

After watching that, ever since I’ve considered my medals as nothing but pieces of silk.

Anyone who crossed that airfield willingly deserved any medal the generals could come up with.

But most just left with the most important thing: their lives…but also with a huge gaping hole in their soul.

Watch it. It’s incredibly moving.

Hated ‘The Pacific”. Watched the entire series twice. So far. Depressing, especially the Peleliu episode.

It’s amazing that nobody ever noticed the hordes of disfunctional, PTSD-stricken veterans of WWII as they wandered the country, homeless and broken. I wonder how many WWII vets (or Korean vets for that matter) have filed claims for PTSD. I don’t think there is any statute of limitations on PTSD.

Peleliu…The epitome of a Battlefield Meat Grinder.

“…that such men lived!”

Tanks Ex. Maybe that Commandant of the Corps needs to review this. Might change his mind on getting rid of some rolling/flying/things that go BOOM stocks.

Peleliu was my great-uncles third campaign with the 1st MarDiv in WWII following Guadalcanal and Cape Gloucester. His Company Commander on Peleliu, George P Hunt, wrote a book Coral Comes High about Peleliu. K/3/1 had the extreme left flank of the invasion and faced Bloody Nose Ridge. Uncle Joe had previously been awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart at Cape Gloucester.

Uncle Joe survived Peleliu and was shipped home afterwards. He made two additional amphibious landings, Inchon and Wonsan and fought a strategic retrograde as part of the 1st Marines at Chosin Resevoir. But that was a later special kind of hell.

“With the Old Breed” was another good book on the subject. Read that one back in 8th grade

Written by Eugene Sledge, one of the main characters in “The Pacific”, which was at least partly based on it.

Did not know that.. thanks for the info Tim!

Combat Historian

Peleliu, the toughest single battle ever fought by 1st Marine Division in WWII, and eventually reinforced by a regiment of the 81st Infantry Division as the valiant Marines bled out on the nightmarish ridges and rock spurs of the Umurbrogol Pocket and Bloody Nose Ridge. Now virtually forgotten, Peleliu is described by the Marine Corps Museum as the “bitterest battle ever fought by the U.S. Marines in World War II”…
