Former VA Hospital Employee Pleads Guilty to Murders of Seven Veterans

| July 15, 2020

Wait for it…

A former nursing assistant at the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Clarksburg, West Virginia, pleaded guilty Tuesday to the murders of seven veteran patients and an attempt to kill an eighth at the facility.Reta Mays, 46, worked the night shift at the medical center’s medical surgical award and was accused of injecting seven patients with fatal doses of insulin, in addition to being charged with intending to kill an eighth by the same method between 2017 and 2018.

She entered a guilty plea on all eight charges in federal district court and waived her right to a grand jury trial, affirming with a tearful voice to District Judge Thomas Kleeh that she was of sound mind in admitting her guilt.

Her plea bargain includes seven life sentences for the murder charges, a 20-year sentence for the charge of assault with intent to commit murder, and a $500,000 fine.

At least 26 family members of the victims were present in the courtroom Tuesday for the proceedings, which also were broadcast via Zoom. Defense attorneys requested time before sentencing to “develop mitigating evidence,” meaning they will investigate possible reasons for Mays to have committed the crimes — circumstances that might draw a lesser sentence.

Aaaaaand…

Mays, an Army veteran, told the judge she is taking medication for post-traumatic stress disorder.

There we have it.  I wonder how she caught the PTSD in the Army.  I talk to Basil Hayden or George Dickel about my problems from time to time,  they seem to think nobody really gives a shit about my feelings and the Soviet just laughs at me.

My experiences with the VA and its staff are outstanding.  I have not a single complaint.   But then again,  I never had some Candy Striper stick needles in me.

Back in the primitive days I worked in a hospital, it was illegal for anyone less than a degreed nurse to even give a shot.

Twist

Death by lethal injection sounds like a fitting sentence to this, but that would be just too easy.

Death by a thousand needles?

Amateur Historian

Each one of the 4 to 6 gauge needle.

How about death by a half dozen bayonets?

USAF (Ret)

Was stationed at Clark (74-79) in the Philippines. There was a bus accident that killed 30 people, but not the driver.

A few weeks later my house maid showed me a newspaper article. It seems that the driver “committed” suicide. According to the newspaper “he stabbed himself over 30 times with a bolo knife.”

One of the worst “suicides” I had heard about until the Clintons.

I hears Mays has the “lost Epstein suicide watch tapes,” evidence of the Clinton Foundation money laundering and 20 years of flight manifests of people who visited Epstein’s island.

Why life sentences?

A murder should be paid with the life of the murderer, so the other wanna-be murderers see and tremble.

Somebody get this murderers records so we can see what service she performed to infect her with the PTSD.

Ex-PH2

Prosecutors had said they were investigating up to 11 suspicious deaths at the facility. – rather scary news.

This does not generate much confidence one should have in the quality of care at VA health care centers.

I can easily say the same about civilian health care systems. Look up Charles Cullen or Orville Majors. Insulin is not a controlled substance and is readily obtainable in any hospital by any nursing staff member. When insulin is prescribed in an inpatient setting, it is only to be administered by an RN, and the type (NPH, Regular) and dosage is verified by a second RN. Nursing assistants are not legally allowed to dispense any medications.

Hope her life is as miserable in prison as it is for the families of those she killed. Bitch! And, PTSD my ass, just her dirty damned lawyers attempt to mitigate her sentence.

So many questions.

How many suspicious deaths does it take for the VA to take notice? OK, the first one might slip through the cracks. By the third, any sane person should expect somebody to notice, if not by the second one.

What do these clowns find unacceptable? How many of them have been fired? Is there no accountability for meds? I know, insulin is not considered a “controlled substance” but shouldn’t it be under some sort of control?

What is going on that something on this scale could happen? It doesn’t appear that she was hiding what she was doing or being particularly clever about it. How many people had to look the other way for her to continue murdering people?

Crazy. And folks wonder why some of us don’t want to go to a VA hospital for anything.

Grandpa avoided the VA like the plague. I won’t have sh*t to do w/ ’em now. Understandable.

Honor and Courage

My Father got his dose at the Cincinnati VA hospital in the 80s. They finally caught the SOB when he knocked off a 16 year old at another hospital. He made a plea deal and everything was covered up. He did life at the Lebanon Correctional. Somebody should have done the same to him.

OWB

It is that default to hiding things that bureaucrats do so well. Sure, there are mistakes made every day in civilian hospitals as well, but not to the same degree as we see in cases such as this. The threat of civil lawsuits do have a positive impact upon accountability.

IDC SARC

Sustain her on paralytics without loss of consciousness/sensation.

Perform various amputations/removals of non-vital organs and tissues. Allow recovery and recuperation from each procedure…perhaps one for each victim.

Loop the procedures on video and project them in her room at high volume.

Then eventually and again without benefit of analgesics inject her with potassium chloride for the finale.

..just my first idea
