Man Loses Job After Rant About Mask

| July 8, 2020

Several news outlets, including the USA Today, are reporting that a Florida man has now lost his insurance job over a rant in a Fort Myers COSCO.

Apparently, a woman had pointed out that the man was not wearing a mask and he got upset with both her and someone that tried to intervene.

The man was later identified as Daniel Maples.  The insurance company he worked for fired him after learning of the incident and viewing the video.

To be honest, I don’t know how I feel about this.  I don’t take sides in the particular dispute above other than it does seem like Maples overreacted to the situation.  It is like watching a train wreck.

I liken this to smoking since it not only affects the smoker’s health but those around them.  If someone is a smoker, and there is no smoking indoors, then they probably get irritated when someone points out the obvious to them.

I prefer that people wear masks in public but the problem is enforcement.  When the establishments don’t enforce it, it then falls to the individual that cares whether others are wearing masks or not.

If someone is elderly or has an underlying health condition that puts them at risk of COVID-19, they have a reasonable sense of security when they walk into an establishment that has signs posted that all patrons must wear a mask.  If someone chooses not to, then it puts the establishment in a tough situation as to whether to police this.  That is when these types of problems arise.

Whatever happened to having a sign that says “No shirt, no shoes, no service?”

On the other hand, people do have legitimate reasons for not wearing one.  However, they can make an allowance for this by having other members of the family go into the store.

I hate to see a trend of people losing their jobs over a lapse of judgment.  Now, stating “All Lives Matter” with a counter to “Black Lives Matter” will quickly get you fired, but using the term “All Black Lives Matter” will cause consternation but allows you to keep your job.

Since every citizen with a cell phone may possess a social justice agenda, everybody has to have their head on a swivel.  Although being careful of what you say is always a good thing, now you have to be careful of what people THINK about what you say. In other words, you are at the mercy of their interpretation.

I propose that we have new rules in place.

For instance:

  1. Everything you said and/or posted to social media before you reached age 21 should be forgiven.
  2. Three strikes and you’re out.  Doing something stupid once can be considered a lapse of judgment, two is a pattern and three is someone that is unwilling to see the error of their ways.

Seriously, I can make a case against anybody.

  • Do you want to buy a car from a man that wore a leisure suit back in the 1970s?
  • Do you want to buy crops from a farmer that used DDT back in the 1960s?

Next, it will be the people that are neutral – “do you really want to elect a person that failed to speak out when this or that was happening.  If they were not part of the solution they were part of the problem.”

Highest producing sales agent and that shitbird boss lets the man go. I’m not on facebook or social media. Question: Is TAH considered social media???? Just asking.

Andy11M

well, we can’t like and share, and I’ve never been shadow banned by the mods, so no?

old98z

@Steve – good neutral way to bring subject – kudos
@Jeff – TAH is public and interactive so that would point to both ‘social’ and ‘media’

Slow Joe

TAH social media?

Nope. I cannot post pictures of myself naked showing my big, huge, massive, heart, so nope.

AW1Ed

While not expressly forbidden, at least with “NWS” attached, sorry but a sense of decorum prohibits me from posting such a thing.
A pink bathrobe, now…
*grin*

Anti-social media?

Social anti-media?

Business people care more about being cowardly than making a profit today.

Twist

I don’t like wearing a mask, but if a business requires one then I will wear one. The way I see it is that it’s their business their rules. On the days that it ramps up my anxiety I just don’t go to places that require one or I just don’t go at all. Anxiety is one of my diagnosed symptoms and for some reason a little bit of restricted breathing can trigger it even though I never had a problem with it before.

A Proud Infidel®™️

The business requiring customers to wear a fear mask is one thing because they have a right to. Little man having a juvenile hissy-fit on camera about it is another and he did it to himself!

Doug

I don’t like wearing masks either, but I see it well within the rights of a company to demand their customers wear them.

This guy fucked up.

Comm Center Rat

I agree. I also don’t have a problem using hand sanitizer and having my temperature checked, if required by a business. This dude’s t-shirt makes it seem he was looking for a confrontation that day.

One of his self-identified “Likes” is “mentoring others.” LMAO

The only thing missing from the story is whether this former insurance brah is a “veteran.”

The Other Whitey

Pretty much. I’m sick of wearing masks and wish the bullshit hysteria would stop, but a business can make its own rules for customer admittance. I fully support the Right to Refuse Service.

Wear a mask, wash your hands, don’t sneeze on your buddy. Virus time, what can we say?

Ex-PH2

I don’t like wearing those masks, either, because it’s hay fever season (anything that lets pollen loose!) and I have enough issues with that. But the mask just makes it worse because pollen can still irritate your eyes and that causes runny noses (on me, at least) and a lot of sneezing and use of kleenex.

I don’t take antihistamines when I drive, period, so that’s out. I’m screwed because of the mask requirement.

Boiling Mad CPO

I also dislike wearing a mask but it makes the wife feel better, so be it. Happy wife – happy life

If a store requires a mask either put one on or stay out of the store. If a store requires one and you see someone in the store not wearing one, stfu and mind your own business. Problem solved. Something about people walking up to other people to confront them with cellphone in hand bothers me more than people who don’t wear masks in a store that requires one.

Jay

I prefer not to wear one. I cant breath in one. I’ve broken my nose too many damn times and am a legit mouth breather. Ive seen all the stores here advertise requiring one short of having ‘an exemption’….and I see about 40-50% of the population NOT wearing one. But I keep one in my back pocket (because THAT is safe), and wear it covering my mouth but not my nose. Because they can make me wear one…but they can’t make me wear it CORRECTLY.

David

Someday we will look back on social media as a key factor in the destruction of modern civilization. Too, I think aliases on line contribute… if you can’t use your real name, you should probably shut up.

5th/77th FA

Dumbass. Even if you have been living under a rock, everyone should know by now that the world is full of people out to get you and have their 15 minutes of fame. AND that a company can and will fire you for actions that they don’t like, on or off the clock.

And no, I don’t like to wear a mask either, and don’t really like a whole lot of people, ‘specially the general public, ergo, I avoid them every chance I get. I keep a mask in my pocket and when I have to go into a store, I’ll slip it on, do my business in there, and gtfo. Never been a big fan of mail order, but it seems as if I may have no choice, this is our new normal.

OldCorpsTanker72

“On the other hand, people do have legitimate reasons for not wearing one. However, they can make an allowance for this by having other members of the family go into the store.”
How does this not work both ways? If you’re afraid of getting sick, stay home. I’m not your doctor or your mommy, it’s not my job to keep you well.

USMC Steve

There it is. With few exceptions, I hate the human race. I also have no interest in their well being or safety. So if they don’t want to get sick they can wear their masks and be deluded into a sense of safety. I really don’t care. If I get sick, I stay home, and if I am asymptomatic, or bsymptomatic, or whatever I guess that is tough. After looking at the figures, not even a quarter of 1 percent have gotten it, and less than .00004 percent of the population have died.

OldManchu

Shut up and just be SCARED will ya! Stop thinking like that.

Bob Drennan

Anything is Mask shows it’s the health care version of gun control. I mean this this is the BS.
“they have a reasonable sense of security when they walk into an establishment that has signs posted ”

Doesn’t do shit but they feel better? What else are you willing to give up so others “only feel better” Sounds like speech is next..opps this shows it’s too late for that also. So much for supporting and defending the Constitution unless you get to pick and choose the parts or who or how this weeks winds blow.

26Limabeans

There are signs all over the place advising people to stay home.
He should have stayed home.
Not because of Corona but because of his temper.

HMCS(FMF) ret

And in this day and age where just about everyone has a camera on their phone and some sort of social media account, all it takes is a person melting down and it getting posted to get you and/or your spouse canned from their job. Companies do it as part of their “social responsibility” statement to shoe the public that they are follow “approved societal norms”.

26Limabeans

Concealed camera carry. No permit needed.

Starvagabond

I don’t need a mask. I have an equally magic talisman and always wear a condom when i go out. So, i’m good.

Green Thumb

Idiot.

Friend

I have to wear a mask because of medical conditions and assholes not wearing them put me in danger..
Had several made with print that says…
“6 feet motherfucker” and “back the fuck up”
Wish I could share a picture.

The Dead Man

Just to be blunt? Those people wearing a mask are still contaminating everything. Those cloth masks that are being reused need to be washed after you’ve gone out in public and started fiddling with it. If you’re sick, you’ve contaminated it directly and then every time you touch it spreads things. If you’re not sick, but you fiddle with it after touching other things, you’re directly exposing yourself to disease and then also contaminating other things.

Cough into the crook of your arm. Wash your hands regularly and don’t touch your face. It worked for a clean room handling dialysis fluid creation.

That’s not getting into how bad people are at washing their hands and evidence that this disease is fecal-oral transmitted on top of the basic cough/three hour-72 hour potential life span since I still couldn’t find that information.

Green Thumb

Dude, I don’t think you were tracking what he said.

I will, though, take some of what ou are smoking.

Seems like good stuff.

The Dead Man

This whole thing over masks is completely irrelevant when you don’t know how to actually wear them. I see people constantly handling their mask. Re-using it after wearing it out. Handling it after handling contaminated vectors. Pulling it on and off again and so on. Unless you’re washing your hands every time you touch your mask, or washing before you touch your mask, you’ve contaminated it and anything else you touch.

We’d legit be better off teaching people how to actually wash their hands and avoid touching their face.

Ret_25X

Masks are PERSONAL protection, not OTHER protection.

Sigh, the mask debate is retardation on meth.

If you are at risk, wear a mask. If you infected STAY HOME!

But by this point we must assume that everyone has been exposed to some degree.

Again, my mask does not protect YOU. It protects ME.

YOUR mask protect you whether I wear one or not.

Mandating masks for all is not going to change a damn thing because those at risk believe they are no longer at risk as long as others wear masks.

That is retarded.

OldCorpsTanker72

The “assholes not wearing them” don’t put you in danger. Covid19 is here, Friend, you need to learn to deal with it. Wearing a mask with the messages you put on yours, however . . . Seriously, no one has ever punched you in your foul-mouthed face?

Friend

No…

timactual

No…not yet.

Fixed it for you.

Friend

Won’t happen because I AM RESPECTFUL and don’t wear it in public but do wear my POW-MIA mask also made by friends…
Papa said acting like a idiot in public shames our family name…

AW1 Rod

Concur. Just like the Spanish Flu and Hong Kong Flu…..for which no cure was ever found and are STILL out there, somewhere…..COVID-19 is now a fact of life. Suggest that Friend finds a better way of dealing with this fact than printing stupid messages on useless placebo masks.

timactual

“6 feet motherfucker” and “back the fuck up”

Sounds like a challenge. I’m your huckleberry.

akpual

Then it would be okay to fire someone, even if their job required no driving, because they endanger the public?

akpual

That is if they got DUI.

The Dead Man

Are you going to start ticketing people that are wearing the mask incorrectly, thus creating the vectors as though they weren’t wearing one anyway?

akpual

Nope, was just wondering who it is ok to fire and for what.

Old NFO

It will be interesting when they start coming for the CovidKarens…

Penguinman000

Cancel culture is beyond ridiculous. In this day and age everyone is one bad day from having the mob coming for their ability to provide for their family and being doxxed.

Dollars to donuts the majority of the mask police and video warriors would look like complete jackasses if someone filmed them when they had bad day.

26Limabeans

Dolly’s to donuts she’s going to be racially indeterminate.

timactual

Judging from the brief video I’m on the red shirt guys side. The guy with the camera was givng him some crap and red-shirt told him to back off. Aggressively, for sure, but sometimes that’s what it takes. Red-shirt then started to walk away but camera guy pursued him. Camera guy wasn’t as loud, but he was also aggressive.

If red-shirt violated store policies it is up to the store to enforce them, not vigilantes.

11B-Mailclerk

Mask wearing has morphed into social conformity and virtue signaling and obedience to the irrational.

50-90% of those masks are useless to control virus transmission.

Almost no one is following proper mask-wearing procedures.

At best, it is a comforting but largely false “we can do something”. At worst, it is a fraud doing more harm than good.

And then the barking moonbats swoop in.

“Obey or we will shreik!”

No.

And “no” for that very demand.

26Limabeans

I liken the mask to wearing an armband.
Now why would I say something like that?

OldManchu

Hot Yoga…..

Enough said.
