…the Republican led Senate Armed Services Committee has voted to approve an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) renaming all military bases currently named for Confederates. Exactly what pressing issue this would solve was left unsaid, but this is not a trivial undertaking and will shift scarce resources away from real problems facing the military. The Republican-led Senate Armed Services Committee voted on Wednesday to approve an amendment to the NDAA that would require the renaming of military bases named for Confederate leaders.
The committee announced on Thursday that it had voted to advance the NDAA and included an executive summary with text confirming the amendment.
“Establishing a commission to study and provide recommendations concerning the removal, names, symbols, displays, monuments, and paraphernalia that honor or commemorate the Confederate States of America, addressing an implementation plan, cost, and criteria for renaming, among other procedures. The implementation plan is to be implemented three years after enactment,” the summary states.
The amendment, which was introduced by Democrat Sen. Elizabeth Warren and passed via voice vote in a closed-door committee meeting, will give the Pentagon a three-year deadline to rename the bases, Roll Call first reported.
On Tuesday, Warren said in a tweet that she had filed the amendment the previous week.
“As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I filed an amendment to the annual defense bill last week to rename all bases named for Confederate generals. It’s long past time to end the tribute to white supremacy on our military installations,” Warren said in the tweet.
Warren’s tweet came in a response to an opinion piece written by retired Gen. David Petraeus published in The Atlantic which urged the administration to rename the 10 U.S. military bases named for Confederate leaders.
Also on Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said that Trump would “not be signing legislation that renames America’s forts,” and echoed Trump’s opposition to such renaming.
Trump declared in a tweet on Wednesday that he would “not even consider” such an action.

All of this is just one more way to attempt to divide the country and throw some rocks at Trump. Everybody seems to forget why these Forts were named for whom they were, when they were set up. Since most of the training forts were in the South and a large portion of the troops being sent there were from the South, and to help the whole “healing process” from the WBTS, that led to these names. Plus, one has to recall, a number of these served very honorably during the Mexican War.
At least Fort Rucker will be safe. He was only a Colonel, not a General. The City of Atlanta is attempting to force the removal of the John B. Gordon Statue from the Capitol Grounds. He was not a professional “ring knocker” soldier but was a well trusted leader by his men AND Bobby Lee. His troops were among the very few that were still carrying a rifle and ready to continue the fight at Appomattox CH. He and his men led the surrender and were saluted by Gnrl Joshua Chamberlain as they stacked arms. He was also very instrumental in “binding up the wounds” and helping the nation to move forward after Reconstruction.

It would be less of an issue if most weren’t named after genuinely incompetent and terrible generals. Bragg? One of the worst general of the war.
I always that base names should not be after generals but after extraordinary soldiers regardless of rank.
We need a Fort York, and Fort Murphy.

That way the bases serve as an inspiration to soldiers, sailors, and Marines.
By the way, these bases were not named to honor history or the generals. They were named in order to increase recruitment in the South since for generations following the civil war many in the south refused to serve in the “Union Army” because their grandfathers and great grandfathers had been confederates.
I think the decision to name bases after confederates was not universally liked among army staff so some of them, passive aggressively, were named after particularly terrible generals.
Edit: Particularly terrible generals whose incompetence helped the Union win the war.

I just realized it was a little over fifty years ago that I completed/graduated (didn’t think there was a difference until our recent SEAL faker) from my final and fourth course of instruction at the School for Wayward Boys outside Columbus. Those were heady days listening to the lessons learned from people like CPT Willoughby, who earned a Silver Star for the Battle of the Lang Vei Special Forces Camp which was over run with PT-70 light tanks that the MI pogs said couldn’t possibly be there.

We pay Honors to “Dr. Polly”, and have for 40 years, each year doing a history program in Jones County. A full program on that Battle, Sherman’s March and the Battle of Griswoldville. I’ve been to the house, before, during, and after the move. You could still see the blood stains from the men she worked on. Know a number of her direct descendants, surprisingly some of which didn’t know her story till they met me. The original Sunshine Church was burned by Sherman’s (Kilpatrick’s Cavalry) Troops in Nov ’64. All of that is Googleable. Dig deep enough there’s some you tube stuff too.
Lee mighta had to surrender, but I didn’t. They did make my horse surrender. I suspect he’s pulling a plow up Kansas way by now. 😀

What is in a name? Usually very little. In case of these fort names, not much. Most of us who went to Ft. Benning as our finishing school for wayward boys had no idea who Benning was. I didn’t know who Braxton Bragg was until I became a Civil War re-enactor and began studying that war. Thus, the idea that the names on these bases is some kind of pro slavery propaganda is complete bunk. Most of present day young soldiers likely couldn’t tell you anything about the Civil War, let alone the names of its generals and which side they were on. Try asking them basic facts about WWII and Korea and see what answers you get in addition to blank stares.
So, the claim that these base names have any relevance to what goes on in this country now, some 155 years later is complete bunk. Anyone know who Benning was? Cuz I still don’t. Also, I thought Ft. Polk was named after President Polk.

This is the truth. Nobody looks into why their elementary, middle, or high school is named the way it is. Airports, parks, post offices, military posts, the list is endless of stuff we’ve named in honor of someone only for everyone to not care.
My high school was Armstrong. Didn’t give a bit of thought to who that was. The school’s 25th anniversary finally made me realize that 25 years prior was 1969. A school opening in the fall would bear the name of the first man to walk on the moon. Henceforth everyone forgot.
Not to throw in an unnecessary tangent, but you are right about most people not knowing who their school is named after.
Case in point: Jack Benny Middle School in Waukegan, Illinois. I wonder how many of the “39ers” at that school know who Jack Benny was or why their school teams are named the “39ers.”
My community recently renamed our local elementary school. A local historian was doing some digging and it turned out that our elementary school was named after a pedophile.
My high school recently changed their mascot from the “Redskins” to a mascot to be named at a later date. Local tribes for the most part were pretty ambivalent about the name, with exception a very small (3 people) very vocal minority. Still have mixed emotions over the whole thing. Small counties are easily divided over that sort of thing.

If serving on an installation named after a Confederate general truly gives pain to African Americans then there should be a name change. However, the change should only be to that of a Medal of Honor recipient of the same branch of service who was a resident of that state when they joined the service.
I like the idea, CM, but I’d waive it for one thing: If the powers that be ever get stupid enough to rename Ft. Benning, I’d rename it in honor of Robert B. Nett, MoH winner from WWII. I knew Colonel Nett; he was the Industrial Arts teacher at my high school when I attended. No finer man ever lived, in my never-to-be-humble opinion. I could support Ft. Benning becoming Ft. Robert B. Nett, but nothing else. Col. Nett was Infantry all the way.
