Weekend Open Thread

| June 19, 2020

Tomorrow is the first day of summer if you go by the astronomical start of the season. If you go by the meteorological start of the season, summer began on the first of this month. For those who go by the “commercial” start of the summer, it began during Memorial Day. Enjoy your weekend.

The luck of the Black Hearted Irish has smiled upon the King of Battle, King of FIRST once again. Cannot claim skilz or the flogging of an F5 key (Chromie don’t have an F5 key); had just sat down, glanced at the blathering idiot (spapos), hit the home key because I refuse to read or respond to that sissy punk asinine piece of sh^t anymore, and WHOMP there it was, the TAH Friday Weekend Open Thread with Zero (0) comments. Punched in the 1st, circle, circle, load, load, circle, then BAM, beat out the damyanky by mere milliseconds. The posted recipe of TWBGCC and regaining the Crown of FIRST on the Coveted TAH Friday Weekend Open Thread, gives me the opportunity to throw open the Club here at Firebase Magnolia and say, “Put it all on my tab, drinks, Grilled Crab Cakes, Cheese Grits with Shrimps, sausage gravy biscuits, hot wings, and peach cobbler with vanilla bean ice cream…and BBQ Beast!”

On the subject of the Thread? I’d assault that beach and capture ALL of them thar breastworks!

Toxic Deplorable Racist SAH B Woodman

I’m thinking that’s an Israeli beach, and those are some of the FIIIINE ladies of the IDF.
But that’s just my uneducated 2 cents worth.

First!

Hack Stone

Hack Stone has come to the sad realization that his chance of ever getting a second “First Post On The TAH Weekend Open Thread” is not likely to happen, due to the power wielded by the administrators of this blog being baskets, barrels or other large units of issue of deplorables, continuing the “good old boy network” of preventing people of color such as Hack, from ascending to their rightful place as First Posters. And before anyone takes offense at Hack describing himself as a person of color, he would like to remind all of you that “pasty white” is indeed a color.

Now on to more important things. Hack’s attention was drawn to the efforts of senior executives at EBay who launched a vendetta against the operators of a blog that were critical of them. Just wondering if any of these miscreants had doors on their mailboxes of ever stiffed their mothers out of $50,000?

You and me both Hack. I barely blinked and the thread was here with 4 posts.

Hack Stone

Hack would have posted sooner, but he was busy taking care of some software sales. Honest to Buddha, you can ask Seavey.

The TAH WOT Crown of Firsts is never given, it is always earned.
Trust, as a multiple recipient much reloading and swearing at the internet is had.
And in FA’s case, F5 keys smoothed over.

Doesn’t even read F5 anymore. And it’s backlit!

eBay execs at play. Go figure. With all the money they make at their level, why in hell would they care what anyone said about them? I have used eBay many times, with reputable sellers, and have always been pleased. This is what happens when entitled people become corporate executives. They just can’t get their minds out of their 10th-grade mentality.

Hack Stone

Obviously this is the first time in history that a senior executive at a company unleashed his employee(s) to wage a scorched earth war against a blog. Does anyone know what Ebay’s policy is on as to (see what Hack did there?) spandex in the workplace?

Skippy

It’s been years since I scored a hole in one on here
Oddly I was trapped in a navel hospital in Bethesda Maryland
I don’t even remember the year. Then again that’s all I can remember

Hack Stone

Bethesda? While there, did you take the tour of the corporate world headquarters of a proud but humble woman owned business that sells software to the federal government and pick up some of that sweet corporate swag in the gift shop? Those items have a higher return on investment that limited edition commemorative plates from The Franklin Mint.

Skippy

I never made it there LMFAO !!!
but the second time I went there
At the NiCoE clinic they put us up
In a hotel that had a pool on the roof
Me and a few of my battle buddies
Would set up our cameras
And take time delay photos
At night bad ass photos too
We went to Arlington to say our good byes to friends
During a ceremony this lady’s
Phone keeped ringing 😡
Another group picked us up and we took a subway ride to DC got lunch
At a cool cigar / restaurant place
Supper nice please too
next to the White House then to the museum’s and monuments

The name of the cigar room
I think was shellys back room
Coolest cigar room I’ve ever been to

Commissioner Wretched

Not first … definitely not first. But when it comes to trivia, I’m your go-to guy! So here we go! DID YOU KNOW…? How old was the youngest person ever elected Pope? By Commissioner Wretched In 1976, a musical group called War released a single. The single was a favorite of mine, and I’m going to quote some of the lyrics here: “Ridin’ ‘round town with all the windows down … “Eight track playin’ all your favorite sounds …” If you recognize those lyrics, you’ll know the song is “Summer.” My favorite part is the chorus: “‘Cause it’s summer, “Summertime is here, “Yes, it’s summer, “My time of year.” That’s right, friends, in just a few days, we hit the summer solstice! The summer season begins! What are your summer plans? I grant you, since March and the Corona Virus, things are nowhere near what we expected them to be, but don’t let that mess up your summer. I don’t plan to let it mess up mine. In fact, I plan to continue what I always do – bring you the most interesting trivia I can find. It’s also “Trivia, my time of year.” So off we go! Did you know … … there is a reason those unwanted e-mails you get are called spam? The term was appropriated based on a 1970 Monty Python sketch, in which a group of Vikings sang “Spam” over and over again. (“Lovely Spam, wonderful Spam …”) … if you straighten out a standard coat hanger, you’ll have a wire 44 inches long? (But what can you do with a 44-inch wire?) … blue whales can go for up to six months without eating? (So could I, if I really wanted to.) … there is an ice cream that changes color while you’re eating it? Developed in Spain, Xamaleon (chameleon) is a mix of natural flavors including strawberry, cocoa, almond, banana, pistachio, vanilla and caramel. Creator Manuel Linares (born 1977) isn’t saying anything else about the concoction, since he is trying to secure a patent for it. But as you lick the ice cream,… Read more »

(But what can you do with a 44-inch wire?)

Wire hangers can come in handy. I once used a wire coat hanger to fabricate a temporary replacement for a broken exhaust hanger on an older vehicle until I could get a replacement. That beat the hell out of dragging the exhaust on the road for several miles . . . .

5th/77th FA

The wire coat hanger can also come in handy to practice your B & E skilz for when some Ms Thang locks her keys in her vehicle. They get real appreciative when they don’t have to call a locksmith…or their whomever/whatever.

11B-Mailclerk

Chop a four inch section of wire hanger. (Brass is best.) Flatten one end like a screwdriver. Use to scrape carbon deposits off the M-16 bolt and its corresponding socket in the bolt carrier.

Works like a charm.

Hondo

A brass wire hanger? Good luck finding one of those. Every wire hanger I’ve seen during the past 3-4 decades has been varnished iron or mild steel; I don’t think I’ve personally ever seen a brass one.

FWIW: many also start to rust like hell after they get a few years old, so you really don’t want to leave good clothing on them for storage.

11B-Mailclerk

Some of the ones we had from issue were brass others were the usual crappy pot metal.

I chopped up one of each to make scrapers for the platoon cleaning kit. The brass was quite hard.

rgr769

That used to work back in them olden daze when the lock/unlock button had a knob on it and was located next to the window. Now you need a AAA guy with a slim Jim. And even they won’t work on some vehicles. I accidentally locked another officer’s keys in his 80’s Mercedes at our Reserve unit summer training at a remote Army base. He had to go on a six hour round trip to the nearest Mercedes dealership to get a key made to unlock his car.

5th/77th FA

Roger that rgr769, that’s why I said practice B&E skilz. Newer vehicles go for using the wire to trip the unlock button, or catch the door handle with a hooked end. Improvise, adapt, overcome. There is always one more thing you can try to unlock the goodies. err door.

rgr769

I would hate to think what it would take to get into my locked C7 Corvette. Fortunately, the fob warns me if I leave it in the car. Plus, a call to Onstar and they can unlock the car via satellite.

David

The two folks were actually born two hours apart, too… Eastern zone and Mountain zone.

Cameron

If I’m honest with myself, I’m kinda running low on faith with the way things are going. Not only that, my patience is beginning to wear thin too.

5th/77th FA

Chin up Cameron, be of not only good cheer, but also of good faith. It is young folks like yourself that us older hands depend on for the future. Unlike our resident zamploit, the spapos seagull, you show a maturity, a grasp of what needs to be done, and an intelligence required to get it done. We are counting on you and those like you, and there are damn few like, for the future of this Country. Many of us here spent our entire lives fighting the fight for freedom, despite being called takers and users. The socialistic/communistic indoctrination of the grubmint school system shows that re-education camps do work. By you having spent a lot of time in other countries and obviously being educated with a different slant, you have an advantage over many of the whiny brats, of all ages.

You got this! It has been worse, just not recently. This time is a last ditch effort by the ones that have been trying to destroy this country for at least 50 years.

Cameron

Thankfully, I grew up in Stafford, Virginia which does have good schools. I did go to Nassau in the Bahamas twice on a cruise and Cozumel, Mexico once (also on a cruise, I preferred Cozumel to the Bahamas) and honestly, I’m glad I was born in the US. Japan is the first foreign country I have spent actual time in and while I enjoy it immensely, I definitely couldn’t live here for the rest of my life.

11B-Mailclerk

We win. They Lose.

Graybeard

Hang in there.

God is still in charge. The bad guys lose in the end.

Some of us older folks have been through things like this before (I remember the riots of ’68 and the uncertainty that brought.)

As long as we continue to do our part, our country has a good chance to make it through.

HMCS(FMF) ret

Good words for us to live by right now, Graybeard…

Thanks for posting them.

The two ladies at the top resemble very much two childhood friends, who also blossomed rather nicely.

Ah, memories….

The Other Whitey

Gotta love them IDF hotties!

In the meantime, I finally got that Amtrack to resemble itself.

The individual track links were a bit of a pain in the ass, but unlike that goddamn M60 kit, at least these track links actually fit together!

5th/77th FA

Yes we do lubs us some IDF Hotties. I was blessed (?) to liaison with some way back yonder. It was interesting, to say the least.

Looking good TOW, enjoying the progress, tho prolly not as much as you. Hope the Baby and her Mama are coming along well, you should be getting a little “gleam in your eye” by now. You done told us how hot Mrs TOW is. Steady men, steady! While perusing your progress I forgot to quit clicking and made my way back into AyyyAyy(?)Seva(?) pics.

Combat Historian

The two bikinied lasses in the photo are not IDF hotties; they are U.S. Marine hotties. Key identifiers from photo are the M-60 GPMG in the background, and the ladies carrying M16A2s. If they were IDF, the GPMG in the background would have been an FN MAG. The girls also would have slung M4s if they were IDF instead of long barreled M16A2s. Finally, the girls are USMC instead of U.S. Army because Army gals and guys almost never get to bivouac on a beach like that during or after an FTX; our FTXs are invariably inland like at Bliss, Hood, NTC, Hohenfels, or Grafenwohr. Only gyrenes get to do amphibious FTXs like that and then stack arms and party on the beach afterwards…

The Other Whitey

I defer to your expertise and stand corrected regarding the hotties’ nationality. They remain hot, though.

5th/77th FA

There were rifles in that pic? Missed that somehow. I’d still storm that beach and attack those breastworks.

timactual

Nice models. I used to build a lot of them when I was a kid, but not in such detail. I spent a small fortune (for a kid) on those little Testor’s paint bottles. I think frequently spending all day in a closed room with all that paint and the glue might have been counterproductive.

“I love the smell of toluene in the morning…”.

Anybody here at TAH been out shopping for bicycle parts lately?

The stores in town are out of tires, tubes & rim tape. And, not the best of luck on line either. Either out of stock or in many cases, August delivery.

First there was a run on TP, hand sanitizer, flour, yeast, etc. ….and now bike tires & tubes??

Verdammt!! It’s a strange world we live in these days.

11B-Mailclerk

Supply chains are all fouled up.

Just wait. As truckers refuse to work cities with imploding order, and de-cop idiocy, things will get worse.

All part of the Left’s plan. Can’t have a Left-Revolution without inflicting misery first.

Not that the misery stops afterwards, no indeed.

David

11b is right, supply chains are screwed up. Plus there has been a huge uptick in bike sales, comparable to that of guns. Bkes are esy to work on:; own a bike, usually buy spare parts – especially tubes and maybe tires, maybe cables.

Graybeard

Late to the party.

Been busy arguing with some folks about whether or not Aunt Jemima or Uncle Ben was/is a racist character.

At breakfast, Mrs. GB spotted what she thought was a possum in broad daylight. Thinking it had to be rabid, I grabbed the .22 with .22 shorts in it, and went out to find a raccoon sow with 4 kits.

At 50′, .22 shorts are not efficient on adult or young coons, but I got her down and a shot at each kit. Then went and grabbed the .22LRs to finish the kits off with. One kit got away – hopefully mortally wounded but…. the chickens and gardens should be safe for a night or two.

Got a colonoscopy coming up this week. Not looking forward to that.

But – I’m still FIRST in the hearts and minds of my family.

Enjoy your weekend, y’all.

The Other Whitey

I hate raccoons. Anybody who likes the nasty little bastards has never had to live around them.

Some folks think they are cute, but they’ve never had one get into their chickens.

I respect their place in the ecosystem – as long as their ecosystem doesn’t intersect my yard (chicken or other).

I get insurance companies wanting to be cautious especially when it comes to opioids, but since I’d already been in them a bit, very small and very carefully, with 3 Drs & a nurse up my ass, to first say I had to change to a different prescription THEN to change to “we need to go back through the prescription history and maybe change the regimen completely (insurance company, YOU’RE NOT DOCTORS YOU FUCKS!!!, anyway…. I’m not on the opioids today. They were such a small, low level, time release capsule, After taking them for two weeks and being off of them for two days the difference is not very significant except for some of the annoying pains have come back so it’s no big deal. Here’s an article about the investigation into the 2017 CIA cyber-tool leaks (aka, “Vault 7” in Wikileaks). The leaked details were pretty insane, with CIA capabilities rivaling and even exceeding many of the NSA capabilities we learned about from the Snowden leaks. And, at the end of the day, apparently it was because the people developing the tools were so focused on making them… they didn’t put much effort into guarding the very things they created:

Not First but always first with the 1st Signal Brigade.
You know who you are….

Current issue of American Rifleman has an article on the
beloved M60 machine gun.
Titled “When Pigs Fly” it goes on to describe the various
airborne mounts and fixes to problems encountered in the field.
Although focused on Helicopter usage the article does give
the infantry side of the story and briefly mentioned that it
was difficult to carry.
Nowhere though does it talk about the reason for the term “pig”
let alone it’s origin which I always assumed was because it
was like trying carry real pig. The article misses the point
of it’s own title.

Nice read though for you rotisserie wing types.

11B-Mailclerk

Feed the pig

Since the MG is about 80% of a squad’s firepower, it is essential to feed that pig.

Everyone else can go hungry for a while. Feed the pig.

Feed the pig.

rgr769

We made the M-60 much lighter and easier to carry in my Ranger LRRP company. We had them modified by the excellent gunsmiths at the 23rd Inf. Division Combat Center. They cut off the barrels of our M-60’s even with the end of the gas cylinder tube. Then they fabricated a sheet metal cap for the back of the receiver to replace the butt stock component. This shortened the weapon by about a foot. We jerry-rigged an over the shoulder padded sling making the weapon easier to carry. Also, so the gunner could fire while standing or kneeling. Since the weapon had no sights, the gunners practiced shooting from the hip and adjusting fire via where the tracers were going. These weapons were only fired at night when the six-man team’s position was compromised, as a last resort. Without the flash suppressor, the muzzle flash looked like an M-2 .50 cal. I once test fired one at night and the muzzle flash was incredible. Of course, the idea was not to be discovered, so as not to get in a fire fight in the first place. Depending on individual loads, many team members carried 100 round belts of 7.62 ammo

Our teams also carried cut down M-79’s as additional weapons. The gunsmiths removed their sights, cut down the barrels even with the forestock, and cut off the buttstock just behind the pistol grip. The men who weren’t carrying M-60 ammo carried M-79 rounds. When you add claymores, grenades, rifle ammo/magazines and water, the combat loads were over 100 pounds.

But obviously, in a rifle company of about a hundred men, it was more important to “feed the pig.”

Green Thumb

Interesting modifications. Seems almost like the granddaddy front runner to the M249 (although 7.62)

The hip and shoulder positions, if I am not mistaken, are actually authorized firing positions (although you will need to do 1,000 pull ups a day to maintain it).

What you describe is a real “Oh Shit” weapon.

Curious: Back in my days, we would run trail – lead – lead, lead – trail – lead, etc. Every clown got a belt or two. That way, depending on where you make contact and the OOM for the guns, you can push rounds up post haste. You have over a 1k between the Gunner, AB and AG (easy over a 1k).

But point being, if you have to maintain out of an extended defensive posture, you have the rounds nearby. Only caveat: make sure PV2 What the Fuck, PFC Asshat, and SPC Suckhole keep them clean and ready to go. (Oddly enough – really never had to worry to much about PVT First Week.)

How many “short” guns did you have? Also, could rounds be tossed back and forth, etc.? One more: did you ever do barrel changes? I bet they were a bitch. Particularly considering the difficultly seeing (nigh blindness) by that muzzle flash.

Either way, you should bring it back. The Fucking Ultimate in Home Defense!

rgr769

As far as I can recall, we had about a dozen M-60’s. I think we had about 9 or ten of them modified. I believe there were six or eight LRRP teams in the company. Each one (six men) usually had an M-60 gunner.

There were no barrel changes as we couldn’t handle the extra weight of a spare barrel. If a team had to rely on the M-60 in a fire fight, a shot out barrel was not an issue. In daylight, “the pig” was used only briefly in an effort to break contact with the enemy and escape. Their job was to observe and report, not engage in a fire fight, which they could only sustain for 20 to 30 minutes at most.

Since we drew the weapons as a newly created company, I am sure we drew the spare barrels with each weapon, as they were in unmodified form before we sent them to the division’s gunsmiths. But the spare barrel kits likely just remained in the arms room. We had pre-packaged emergency resupply loads for each team. I don’t recall whether any of those replacement barrel kits were included. Each team had input into what went into their resupply load. I had one team member that insisted on carrying a Thompson SMG. I only let him carry it because he was able to come up with the ten extra magazines needed for his team’s resupply package.

Green Thumb

Damn.

That a lot of firepower in a close space. But that is what it takes.

I love the Tommy Gun.

timactual

” everyone humping at least a hundred
round belt ”

That’s the theory, anyway. If NCOs and officers don’t do their jobs those belts started to shrink pretty quickly in the field. Claymores get lighter, M-16 magazines get lighter, etc. I still remember one “oh shit oh dear!” moment when my company had a need to redistribute ammunition and I was handed a couple of M16 magazines that only had 4 or 5 rounds in them. We went through those “100 round” belt surprisingly quickly, too, although the problem was eased somewhat because the bolt broke on one M60. All aviation grounded. A thoroughly unpleasant couple of days.

Lessons learned;
Have NCOs check basic loads daily.
Carry spare barrels and bolts for M60s.
Carry spare trousers.
Again, have NCOs check basic loads daily.

Green Thumb

Word.

Green Thumb

33% apiece (Now the 240 obviously). And you had to feed them sop they would not fucking jam.

Always leave two up when cleaning in the punk bunk.

The one you take down to during MWE can be replaced with the M249 as it can mount of tripod.

rgr769

The summer I worked for Sperry-Utah, we packaged and boxed all the components to arm Hueys for the Viet of the Nam war. It was interesting seeing all those parts assembled on a Huey three years later when I first climbed into one armed with M-60’s.

After decoding 100 felonious messages you can begin the process of receiving a “upgrade” in your new path to the “Phelons Circle” and into “Phony” Phil’s Philonious and Phildosical confidance.

What a deal!

WOW!
Just had another box truck ram into the OLD covered (VT thing) bridge on my street. I assume he did not notice the three warning sign’s until the crash. He did a slow turn around and drove away with wood hanging his truck. the Guy down the street has his security camera aimed at it. So let the LEO track him down.

Hope they get him. We have only about 4 still left down here. This Gentleman built a bunch back in the day. Another working one is at Hurricane Shoals Park Jackson County.

It was at least 50 years ago when I saw a sign before a covered bridge in Vermont listing the tolls. It covered everything, how much per sheep, cow, dog, pedestrian, horse, buggy, car, truck, etc. I think it was 2 cents per sheep. Was that common?

Holy Crap ——– Update from Elko, Nevada.

1 – The Elko POW*MIA Awareness Ass.
is planning something for July 4th.
Ok.
Here’s where it gets interesting….

2 – The Elko POW*MIA Awareness Ass.
is now holding their meetings at the local VFW !!!!!

That’s VFW Post 2350, who has (publicly) done NOTHING
about Phony Desert Storm Times Veteran LES BROWN,
who flaunted his VFW Membership over 10 years ago,
not only at the VFW Department of Nevada,
but also at the Nevada State House (Assembly) in Carson City, Nevada.

Is there anyone living in the state of Nevada
who is willing to actively CHALLENGE Les Brown’s VFW Membership?

<<< Livid.

PS – It worked in Colorado,
where local VFW members got tired of
“At Large” member GEORGE TEAL
wagging his VFW cred while running for office.
Now a town councilman, George Teal is running for County Commish.
He might win, too… which sucks..
because his opponent is a legit Bronze Star combat veteran.
George Teal is now outed and embarrassed..
but he is hiding in silence, making more false statements,
and hoping to pull out a victory.

LES BROWN deserves a news story like this, too.
