Our society is totally screwed
Seriously, over 50% of our voting public is absurdly idiotic. If Democracy is predicated on an informed electorate, then we have a #fail.

Yep, we’re doomed.
I saw this last night. To be fair, they did target the vapid bikini crowd. LOL!!
But overall, I think you’re right. Doomed.
This makes my brain hurt. In December(remember, the world is ending this year!) i’m going to find high ground outside a major U.S. city, bring a grill, some meat, a cooler full of beer, some tunes, a high powered telescope, and watch chaos/hilarity ensue.
When people use Jon Stewart as their primary source of news, and they let Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey do their thinking for them, this is what happens.
That was painful to watch.
But, you notice they went to a beach and not a library or a 4th of July parade to ask those questions.
It wouldn’t have been any fun if anyone they talked to had known the answers, would it?
The herd is in serious need of thinning…
So, just wondering who raised all these folks?
Yep. Looks like Apu (Simpsons) was right, even if he was speaking in the first person. (smile)
I used to think these things were somewhat staged. Like reality TV or something. People coached or the footage altered.
Then I started talking to my sister in law more. I don’t kow if it is pure stupidity or ignorance. Meaning their brain case housing can’t hold any more inforation (stupidity) or that they just choose to be more interested in parties, drinking, and having fun (ignorance).
I guess at this point it doesn’t matter. The result is the same.
Sad fact on the state of my generation! On the positive note though what they lack in brain power they make up for in looks!;D
What does 17760704 mean to most people? Don’t know and don’t care. Thats life, people are thinking more about next 4 hours and 4 hours after that. Whats for dinner? Whats good to watch on boob tube? Do I have sufficient funds to make mortgage for this month or buy groceries? Declaring independence from an island empire 3000 miles away, more than 230 years ago holds no consequence in day to day lives of our citizens. I
If more and more wake up — there may be a chance.
The 2010 Election showed a 78-year turnaround change.
But many, many “individuals” — ARE doomed; they killed themselves inside .

Nuff said.
Adirondak Patriot. I dont agree with a good chunk of Jon Stewarts liberal views, like on immigration, gun laws, govs large role in our lives etc.. but I do know one thing by watching him and that is even tho he is liberal, he is equally unbiased in his show. When Dems screw up, he def holds them accountable. When they lie, he admits it and calls them out for it, just like he does republicans. And whats crazy… Daily show watchers do better on questions about foreign and domestic politics than all other Main Stream media news stations. Fox of course does the worst, followed closely by MSNBC. What that shows is how clearly biased they both are, and that people rarely get much truth and news to the stories. Im sure there are other studies out there. But this alone tells me, that with what we have offered to us, unless your getting your news on the internet from other sources. Daily Show is indeed the best place to get your news. here is the article with the study, scroll down and look at the graphs, very telling. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/23/fox-news-less-informed-new-study_n_1538914.html

Your fine attitude, just might save us all.
(not entirely serious)
Before anyone attacks me for it, I know this is a Huff Post liberal article aimed at Fox News, but the fact is MSNBC doesn’t fair much better than Fox does. The actual study is impartial. The article is slanted. Daily Show is still better than both of the so called “News” channels.
Sorry, just to add to my previous post. I saw the segment on O’Reilly Factor other night – and despite disgust some feel, I agree with Bill O that we in this country have right to be ignorant – the founders would approve. Yeah and their vote counts same as someone who gives a darn.
Devtun–we have the right to be ignorant–we don’t have the obligation to be RUN BY the ignorant, nor do we have to cater to their whiny tantrums in the name of “fairness.”
Equal opportunity does NOT guarantee equal results, particularly when the amount of effort put into said opportunity varies as much as it does.
#15 YOU FOOL!!! We’re ALL gonna DIE!!! (Slightly less serious)
And I think that’s the problem Devtun. The right to be ignorant AND vote. Although I doubt most of those morons voted, except maybe for hope and change in 2008.
YES! People really are that fucking stupid. and to think I spent 20+ years protecting stupid people’s freedom.
@21 Stupid people always find a way to be slaves, no matter how much you try to protect them.
Try thinking about it like this: You spent twenty years making room for people that WANT to be free.
Tanner, believe it or not, I actually agree with you about Jon Stewart. He’s a libtard of the highest order, but he holds both sides accountable for Teh Stoopid on his show. I’ll never forget the Daily Show segment about the Marines vs. Code Pink asstards! Friggin’ hilarious!
Rob Riggle (LtCol, USMC) is one hell of a comedian. Dropped out of flight school to pursue a career in comedy, became a PAO in the reserves instead!
One question that should have been asked for each – are you a registered voter? I’m going out on a limb here by presuming that the majority of the respondents in the piece were not, or couldnt be bothered to go to the polls.
Is it a right to be ignorant? Sure. And yet, legal immigrants to this country could put most of the natural born citizens to shame with their knowledge of American history.
Is it too much to ask that you pass a basic skills test to get a voter registration card, much like a drivers license?
@Tanner – I wont slam you other than to say your bias is showing. ALL television media is sorely lacking in content and heavily biased. Its not news, its entertainment. They ALL have ratings numbers to meet, and they structure their content to satisfy their demographic. Staying informed takes effort and work that most dont have time or interest in.
Commo, although I was hyperbolizing, your comment about immigrants is EXACTLY what I was thinking about. People come here and WANT to be citizens. They study hard, learn the language, and look at the history and the constitution. And then they take the test, and for many of them it is a defining moment in their lives.
Those folks I would drive to the polls.
And then we have morons who think Abe lincoln was President #1 or #100 and their vote counts equally. Ugh. I get 1 man 1 vote, but I’d prefer the one voting not be a complete moron.
Immigrants get it, because they had to earn it.
Redacted1775 – Riggle’s an Lt.Col.? Wow, I had no idea. I knew he was a Marine. Didn’t realize he was actually an officer.
And @14, I disagree about Fox and MSNBC. I think that any folks that get their news from sources that cover white girls killed in Aruba for 116 straight days instead of covering actual news stuff is a bad idea. I frankly don’t watch any news except rarely I will watch Headline News while doing other things just to make sure nothing huge happened while I was sleeping. But, I don’t think News educates anymore.
And I love Jon Stewart. Don’t agree with him, but he seems honest and is funny as hell.
Yep. I just looked him up in MOL for the hell of it. He’s got some old pics from his early days in the Corps on facebook.
TSO – I actually watch BBC nowadays if I want actual news.
I just looked him up on Wikipedia too. I may have a crush on him! 🙂
I’m going out on a limb here by presuming that the majority of the respondents in the piece were not,
Half the “women” he interviewed looked underage. Or maybe I’m just getting old.
I’m THIS close to having a “Herbert the Pervert” moment. Jailbait should NEVER be allowed to wear bikinis. EVER.
I frankly don’t watch any news except rarely I will watch Headline News
Which itself barely qualifies as news. I don’t think I’ve watched a Big 3 networks evening newscast since the early 90’s. All I typically do now is hit the wire service sites and pick and choose which stories I want to read up on, and even then the bias is dripping off the screen (think AP, Reuters, et al.)
I hate the BBC too from when I used to be on their radio. They would have like 6 people in each discussion and it just turned into a shout fest. Hated those interviews.
I stick to drudge to be honest.
How did I show Bias? I said that with what we have available from on-air TV “news” that the Daily Show viewers are the most informed. Thats not Bias, thats from an independent study that shows its true. I agree with TSO, our “news” org arent news at all. Just saying that its not a horrible thing for our young people to be watching the Daily Show because they get more actual news than if they watch one of the 24 hour news org. Def think they should get more news elsewhere, but they could do worse. That is an opinion, but its based on facts not bias.
I like watching BBC, because there’s not a whole lot of bells and whistles to distract me. I have the attention span of a gnat anyway, so it’s easier for me to just sit and listen to these guys speak. Besides, their accents are hot! 😉
I actually read a variety of things. Drudge and Fark both, although the comments on Fark aggravate me. I also read a lot of Russian press, including Vedomosti and Gazeta.ru. Vedomosti is a GREAT business news source, actually, and very non-biased as far as Russian press goes.
I’ll also delve into Politico and Real Clear Politics, as well as the Economist.
I’ll watch Fox and MSPMS when I want to get angry and scream at something.
One of the few conservative editorial staffs is found at IBD. Hard to dispute a lot of the stuff they bring to the table as well. I’d dare say they’re more conservative overall than even the WSJ staff.
True on IBD. One of their reporters is dating a friend of mine. Really great guy, and VERY smart! If he’s any indication of the kinds of folks they employ, they definitely merit reads often.
All above comments aside; I have, for years, made this observation: In America we enjoy the privilege of driving, as well as the privilege of voting. The difference in the two is that in order to exercise our privilege of driving, we must first pass an examination. Voting has no such limit, and each can affect the society around us.
Sad but true.
And,an aside: Can someone please translate the “new english” word: “Teh”? I see it in many posts and comments, even in one or more comment to this post.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=teh
“The America of my time line is a laboratory example of what can happen to democracies, what has eventually happened to all perfect democracies throughout all histories. A perfect democracy, a ‘warm body’ democracy in which every adult may vote and all votes count equally, has no internal feedback for self-correction. It depends solely on the wisdom and self-restraint of citizens… which is opposed by the folly and lack of self-restraint of other citizens. What is supposed to happen in a democracy is that each sovereign citizen will always vote in the public interest for the safety and welfare of all. But what does happen is that he votes his own self-interest as he sees it… which for the majority translates as ‘Bread and Circuses.’
‘Bread and Circuses’ is the cancer of democracy, the fatal disease for which there is no cure. Democracy often works beautifully at first. But once a state extends the franchise to every warm body, be he producer or parasite, that day marks the beginning of the end of the state. For when the plebs discover that they can vote themselves bread and circuses without limit and that the productive members of the body politic cannot stop them, they will do so, until the state bleeds to death, or in its weakened condition the state succumbs to an invader—the barbarians enter Rome.”
— Robert Anson Heinlein, 1907-1988
I’m not sure I want to believe the above – but I fear Heinlein was correct. And history yields strong support for that thesis.
My God, I LOVE Heinlein!
THANK YOU!!

[ THE REMAINING TEXT IS REDACTED. ]
And I love Jon Stewart. Don’t agree with him, but he seems honest and is funny as hell.
Stewart thinks he’s non-partisan…I don’t think he understands the meaning of the word.
Clay, Stewart actually admitted to being liberal during an interview at some point. He does believe his show is non-partisan. There’s a difference.
I must agree with The Mine-Man (Claymore).
Hope you don’t HATE me, Nicki !!
(I know, I am always butting in on private discussions — go right ahead, just tell me to GET LOST !!)
I knew Wonderbread would one day kill us all.
Heh. Why would I hate you? Clay will attest I’m one of the sweetest, kindest, most docile people on the planet! I don’t hate anyone.
LOL!!!
Hey, to each his own. I know Stewart is a lib. He admits it. I have no problem with it. To each his own. But I do think he does a lot of justice in his show, is spot on in a lot of criticisms, and is pretty even handed when handing out lashings to politicians.
Clay has clearly never been in an automobile with you, wondering if a PLF out the door at 80mph wouldn’t be safer.
Heh! Remind me to ask about that one when we’re on Skype next! LOL! And yeah, Nik is a petite flower…with a 40mm grenade launcher attached. 🙂
As for Stewart, I have my daily fill of dealing with douchenozzles without willingly adding another one to my schedule. Colbert too. Effin’ oxygen thief.
TSO, Geez! You’re STILL on about that? You were strapped in! I didn’t kill us. What’s the big deal, dude? LOL!!!
Clay, don’t believe anything he tells you! LMAO!!!!!
I actually dislike Colbert. He really is a festering yambag. I don’t watch TV a whole lot as a general rule, so most of what I know about Colbert comes from actual news sources. I did watch some Daily Show clips at one point, however, and I did see his interview with someone… I can’t remember whom at this point. He’s a considerably smaller douche than Colbert, whom I really just can’t stand.
