James Richard Lyons; Seaman Apprentice Gunnery Sergeant
Scotty sends us a link to his work on James Richard Lyons, who used to drive “The Wall That Heals” across the country. He tells stories about his four tours of Vietnam where he lost part of his foot and part of his shoulder while he was a SEAL and Force Recon Marine. He tells of the time, as a Marine he charged up Hamburger Hill (he spells it hamberger and it was a 101st Airborne Division operation). He wears Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart and Gunnery Sergeant patches on his vest (that’s him without the pony tail in the photo above). He claims service in Vietnam from 1964 – 1968.
Well, it turns out that Lyons did a year and change in the Navy and left as a seaman apprentice (E-2);
Besides driving The Wall That Heals around the country, Lyons is currently a VFW Post Commander in Opp, Alabama. Even the fake veterans/humans at Veterans Today spotted Lyons as phony.

And for those that are using his current role to denigrate the VFW, it should be pointed out that Lyings previously fooled the Department of Defense (which wrote a PR piece) and got the ball rolling on his first outing.
Since a large number of current era Veterans are NOT joining the VFW, and many Viet Nam Vets have no desire to enter the internet spectrum, don’t expect that posts are going to become internet savy anytime soon. If you would like to see an internet presence for your local post, join the post and volunteer your time to get it set up.

If a big reason not to join is because a few posers get through then I have to wonder. Personally, when I see that my Legion post has given hundreds of Veterans rides to the VA hospital in a year, if one poser gets through I’ll still feel damn good about the others that we helped and one poser isn’t going ruin that. If the post refused to do anything about a poser it would be a different story.

Perhaps, the officers of the VFW of AL will read and comment here on their policies of frauds in the organization, and how other Veterans perceptions of the organization are affected by such reports, even if they cannot comment on a particular case of it.
I do know of one particular case at an AL post, where an actual Veteran merely implied more than he was, and in that case, the Commander of that Post, who happened to be reviewing the valid 214 for membership shut him down completely and quickly, making it known that embellishment would not be tolerated.
TN: good to hear that the post you speak of had strong and ethical leadership who acted appropriately. Unfortunately, at VFW Post 6622 the fox is already inside the henhouse – and he’s running the place.
I also wonder if the AL state and regional leadership know about this. If they don’t know about the allegations concerning Lyons already, I’m pretty sure they’re about to find out about them pronto.
Hondo, I would expect that VFW leadership in AL was previously unaware of, are had not attained substantiation of any rumors they had become aware of, as of the publication of this article.
I would hope that, since the publication of the records here, and at Scotty’s place, along with the links to the contact information of VFW officers in the State of AL, that officers of Post 6622 have been receiving phone calls, along with the officers of District VII, and the State VFW officers. I would hope that their email inboxes are filling up.
No leader or organization can correct errors of which they are unaware, but given the facts presented here, those leaders should move swiftly to remove the offender from his office, and indeed from the membership. I would be surprised and astounded if they did not do so. I have had no experience with the VFW which would suggest any other course of action. For that matter, I’ve seen officers of a Post banned from the Post for far less.
The appropriate actions are being taken in order to resolve this matter within the VFW in Alabama.

Out of sheer boredom here’s my brief story about him again: In 2009 I was tasked with setting up a recruiting display at the 2nd Louisiana All-Veterans Reunion in Baton Rouge (no longer around, though a newer group seems to have one near Fort Polk now–1st year for the original was supposedly good; 2nd year kinda sucked due to weather, not to mention the newpaper ad stating it was at the Fairgrounds again instead of near the USS Kidd; 3rd and last year we could count the number of people who showed up on two hands). That first day, with me set up on the levy, a homeless guy came up with a nice story of his service; guy had a bad hernia and claimed he was trying to get bus fare to the veteran’s hospital. His story sounded decent (he mentioned 3-187 and Rakkasans, and I still believe he may have actually served with 3/101) so I gave him $5; later the guy annoyed security and they “helped” him leave the area, only for him to come bug me again with a completely unbelievable story this time (Recon Delta or some nonsense)–guess he forgot that he’d already suckered me once. I moved down from the levy (where the bums congregrate; the main setups were down the hill anyway) after that. Second day I brought an ice chest full of beer which was shared with the Navy Recruiters. By the third and last day I went out on my own time just to support the event. The coordinators were all veterans ranging from Vietnam to Iraq. This guy (Lyons) was still driving The Wall That Heals at the time, which was one of the attractions for the Reunion. Thanks to low attendance and an overzealous beer guy, we had three tapped kegs that had to go, so a bunch of us hung around the beer truck drinking for free after breaking down the site. The more military shit some people wear (in their civilian capacity) the least likely they are what they say they are. I looked at the history of the USS FORREST ROYAL for the period shown on his military record release and the ship did not go across the big pond until 1967 for the transit to the Western Pacific and operations off the coast of Vietnam. His service of 64-66 does not qualify him as a member for the VFW. The guy he is talking with is WAY too old to have been in the Army to be issued the beret he is wearing. 2 fakers comparing notes?

Lyons, you are a “vet” in that you spent one year and seven months in the Navy. Somehow, though, I don’t that anyone who only spent one year and seven months on active duty during the Vietnam War, didn’t transfer to the USNR after discharge, and left the service after a little over a year and a half as an E2 probably isn’t considered a “vet” by the VA.
I’m sure that it was also a lot more fun to “honor” an unnamed gunnery sergeant by wearing gunny rank than to honor your own service with the two tiny little blue diagonal stripes of a seaman apprentice. You can try to peddle that crap to the uninformed that come to your traveling road show, but it isn’t going to fly here.
